It all began with a ring…
In 1768 Philip Astley paced out a circle on the banks of the Thames in which to perform tricks on horseback. 250 years later, the standard circus ring remains the same size, and that moment is recognised as the birth of modern circus.
This brand new circus show premiered at Norwich Arts Centre in July 2017, kicking off the Circus 250 celebrations in Norwich, one of the six circus cities.
Gossamer Thread Circus invite you on a journey traversing the myriad evolutions of circus in its various and varied permutations, in this the 250th anniversary of its birth.
The show includes a variety of different skills including aerial, acrobatics, sideshow, tumbling, juggling, hula hoops & more and features hand-picked artists from all over the world who have previously worked with the world-renowned companies including:
- The 7Fingers
- NoFit State
- Disney’s new live-action Dumbo film directed by Tim Burton
The show is supported by Arts Council England, Norwich Arts Centre, Seachange Arts & Jacksons Lane London and its premiere was sponsored by Norfolk Gin.
The creative producer, artistic director & founder of Gossamer Thread Circus is Daisy Black who, alongside her performance career, spent 6 years researching and writing a novel about Philip Astley which she began during her time on the Creative Writing MA at the University of East Anglia.
